Credit Card

With an estimated 30 million of us carrying a credit card in the UK it comes as no surprise that the total for transactions in 2003 was in excess of £100 billion. With that sort of money being spent you can grasp the importance of credit cards to big business and the British economy, and why there is a wealth of companies out there competing for your custom.

With almost all retailers in the UK accepting payment by credit card, there is no need to carry cash around with you when you have your plastic in your pocket. Not only does having your credit card make the paying for your purchases simpler, they give you the ability to do so without having the cleared funds in your account. Whereas a debit card takes the money straight out of your bank account, a credit card means the company who supplies you this credit effectively pays the supplier and you then pay back the credit card company. Such an arrangement comes with a number of advantages.

The first benefit with using a credit card is if you want to make a purchase but do not have sufficient funds to cover it, you will be able to buy the item with your credit card, and then pay off the amount off at a later date. Make sure you are aware of the timescale in which to pay off the debt to the card company as this will determine how much you must pay back. It is common practice that if the debt is cleared within a month of the purchase then there will be no charge at all. However, you will be charged interest on the outstanding balance after this period, with rates being typically high compared to other types of loans.

The second benefit for using a credit card is the protection that is offered to the consumer, via the Consumer Credit Act imposed on all transactions. Section 75 states that all consumers have the right to get their money back from the credit card company if the goods they have purchased with their credit card turns out to be faulty. However, this only applies to purchases between £100 and £30,000, anything outside this range and the cover is void. For those who shop over the internet, this can deliver peace of mind for those consumers who may receive products that are in a faulty condition.

The offer of additional protection on purchases, such as extended warranties or fraud guarantees are other incentives credit card companies like to use to gain your custom. This means you will not be liable for any costs if your credit card is used in fraudulent activity.

Many credit card companies offer extra incentives with their products, such as reward point schemes and special discounts in shops that they are affiliated with.
